Carbon 60: A Nobel Prize winning discovery

Carbon 60 earned its discoverers, Kroto, Smalley, and Curl, the Nobel Prize in 1985, found while simulating a stellar atmosphere in the lab. It occurs in trace amounts in all soot and even in outer space, and has been called the most powerful antioxidant ever discovered. Studies have shown it can significantly extend lifespan in test animals, potentially reduce cancer growth, and scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) from living tissue. Others point to re-stimulated hair growth, improved skin texture, and protection against radiation and heavy-metal damage.

Why Most C60 Products Fall Short

As interest has grown, many marketers simply rehash the same data to imply benefits — and often get the science wrong, claiming C60 is "dissolved" in olive oil when it's actually insoluble. Sold as an unregulated supplement, it's commonly mixed into olive, avocado, coconut, or grape seed oil — and even fruity gummies — at strengths typically ranging from 0.4 to 1.1 mg/ml. Most oral products trace back to just one or two sources of C60 powder, repackaged and rebranded down the line.

Strength Claims Can Be Misleading

A label may say 1.0 mg/ml, but that number doesn't tell the whole story. Preparation time varies widely between brands, and particle clusters can range from a few molecules to hundreds per particle — even within the same bottle. Gummies may be the worst offenders, mixing in raw C60 powder with enormous particle sizes. It's why "identical" products often look radically different in color and clarity. The truth is, particle size — not the number on the label — is the real measure of potency.

C60 is a brand-new, manmade molecule with enormous potential to improve human health. And while every manufacturer claims theirs is the most potent and can't be improved — the science says otherwise.

Common Misconceptions about Carbon 60

  1. Mixing time matters. Longer mixing in the dark yields better results — the darker red/purple, the better.
  2. The "1–1.2 gram limit" may be false. Depending on the oil's fatty acids and secondary solvents, we've measured both higher and lower than 0.96 mg/ml.
  3. Oil type matters. We research and test edible oils for their specific ability to emulsify C60.
  4. Particle size is everything. A C60 molecule is about 1 nanometer — so why do other companies filter at 22 microns? That lets huge, clumped aggregates through, and the data shows those large clusters have far less bioavailability and simply pass through the body.

How C60 Is Made, and Why Most Methods Fall Short

Carbon 60 is created through a high-intensity vaporizing process that forms a new carbon allotrope: buckminsterfullerene. The process produces mostly C60, along with smaller amounts of other forms like C70. But there's a catch — C60 molecules love to stick together in clumps.

The science is clear: for the body to respond quickly, C60 needs to be in its individual form — no clumps. That's far easier said than done. C60 powder contains millions of molecules bound together by weak van der Waals forces, and because of its structure, C60 is hydrophobic — it resists mixing in water and other polar solvents.

The common solution is to blend C60 into a non-polar oil like extra virgin olive, avocado, or grape seed. Most manufacturers do this by "spinning" or mixing the oil with C60 powder for days at a time, slowly weakening the bonds between molecules. How many molecules actually separate and stay suspended comes down to a delicate balance of time, speed, vortex, and the right non-polar solvent — and that's exactly where most products come up short.
